Before the introduction of novels, there were weekly magazines which used to be read aloud by one person to a number of people gathered in a group to meet and spend time. Thus previously, the transfer of stories used to be orally.
But then novels were introduced, and people started buying them. Since anyone could have s a separate copy of any book they wanted the y preferred using novels and reading them in home.
thus novels promoted the concept of silent reading.
