Assistive technology resources can be optical, non optical or electronic. They can help to decrease the functional losses in patients with low vision.
Optical aids
Low vision optical aids are task specific. They include one or more lenses which are placed between the eyes and the object to promote enlargement or magnification of the retinal image. Some of the devices are stand and hand held magnifiers, small telescopes, loupes and strong magnifying reading glasses.
Spectacle-mounted telescopes leave both hands free so they can be used for longer viewing periods like watching television, a program, a ball game or a movie.
Small telescopes improve the ability to see distant objects or people.
Non optical aids
They help patients with sight impairment to deal with everyday problems. Some non optical devices are reading stands, absorptive sunglasses, supplemental lighting, tactile locator dots and typoscopes.
Bright coloured bumpy marks can be placed on objects so that the person with low vision can easily identify it. For example if such a mark is there on the oven dial the person can easily find the 350 degree mark.
Higher level of illumination or moving the light source to the side of the better eye can help the patients in seeing things.
Low vision watches are useful for students who are learning time management skills.
Students can use reading guides with highlighters to track print through a tinted window. Reading guides help with tracking needs and contrast needs. They are available in different colours like pink, blue, green, yellow and red.
Typoscopes can help students to focus on a word or track a line of print.
