the male and female body has 23 pairs or 46 chromosomes each, out of which one is pair is special chromosomes. usually men have XY chromosomes and the women have XX chromosomes

the special chromosome pair(diploid) of both gender undergoes meiosis to form two gametes each ( haploid), overall a sum total of 4 haploid gametes. later the X or Y gamete from the male fuses with the X or X gamete from the female and form a chromosome pair, which now has brought in the chromosomal number maintenance.
