Painting a metal, makes a thick layer in between the metal and air, and cut the contact between metal and oxygen in air. This prevent iron from getting oxidise and rust. And we all know rusted metal looses it's tensile strength.
Toss is how painting a thick layer over a metal prevent it from corrosion/rust
