Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts. Chlorophyll is a green photosynthetic pigment within the chloroplast grana that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis. Chloroplasts are found in plant leaves surrounded by guard cells. These cells open and close tiny pores allowing for the gas exchange needed for photosynthesis.

- The chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight turns it into chemical energy through the Calvin cycle that takes place in the thylakoid.
- The light-dependent reactions provide the energized electrons that form carbohydrates from the CO2 molecules and produce energy in form of ATP and NADP.
- After the light energy reaches the chlorophyll of the plant, light-dependent reactions take place mainly in the reaction center of the thylakoid membrane where the reactants chlorophyll, CO2, and water react to produce 6 glucose molecules and the essential byproduct Oxygen.
