Principal quantum number "n" relates to the energy level, which can be related to the electron "shell". n is the shell containing the outermost electron of the atom. For example, the outer electron of sodium is in the 3rd shell, so an electron in sodium can have n value from 1 to 3.
"l" is the azimuthal quantum number, and describes the type of sub sell (s, p, or d orbitals have l values of 0, 1, and 2 respectively). l can vary from 0 to (n-1) as the orbital with l = 1 (the first p oribitral) is actually part of the second electron shell (n=2), and the first orbital with l=2 (the first d oribital) is part of the third electron shell (n=3), etc.
There are three basic types of quantum number in case of an atom according to modern concept of chemistry.
Explanation:
The three types of quantum number are principal quantum number, azimutual quantum number and spin quantum number.
- The spin quantum number can be positive in case of a anticlockwise spin of the electron or negative in case of a clockwise spin of the electrons.
- The principal quantum number is the serial number of the the shell in which the electron is present. It can have its value of one for K Series, two for L series and so on.
- The azimuthal quantum number has a value of zero for S orbital, one for P orbital, two for D orbital and 3 for f orbital.
