A squirrel’s respiratory system works the same way as a human’s, it’s just smaller and much, much faster. Squirrels breathe through their nose and mouth, the air enters the lungs, where the oxygen enters the bloodstream for circulation throughout the body. The difference is in how fast it all happens. Humans breathe about 16–20 times a minute and have a heart rate of around 80. Squirrels breathe 100–125 times a minute and have a heart rate of around 200.
