Explain how skin works as a sense organ

The skin acts as sense organs as due to skin we can feel the sensation such as heat, cold etc. And if we by mistake keep our hand on the thorn then the skin nerve cells directly spends messages to the brain to remove the hand from the thorn.
Skin is the protective cover of the body. And it has many tiny pores that help in the process of sweating. And maintaining the body temp.
