The light energy (photons) in solar rays are absorbed by photo-voltaic cells (semi-conductor junction diodes) and that energy excites free electrons to flow along the substance. Thus a potential difference is generated. Thus the electric current is used to charge a battery (DC) for use directly and immediately or later on.
