mechanical energy is required to start vibrations in a body producing sound. the particles of air transfer the energy from one particle to another without the particle leaving its place.when the particles of sound is near our eardrum the eardrums vibrate and our ear produces sensation of hearing.the disturbance gets carried from one place to another until the energy dissipats

A vibrating object cause air molecules to vibrate. When this vibrations reach to our ear they are collected by the pinna and funnEllen into the eartube . These then strike to the eardrum which starts vibrating the same frequency.
