when the speaker of the loudspeaker vibrates, it creates a series of compressions(region of high pressure) and rarefactions(region of low pressure) by pushing the particles of air back and forth respectively.. hence a series of these compressions and rarefactions is created which in turn propagate sound. It is the energy of the particles that travels and not the particles itself.
