Explanation:
Sound travels through compression and rarefaction of the air just in contact with source. Compression is high pressure area whereas rarefaction is low pressure area.
Because solids have less interatomic space the disturbance is transferred much faster from one atom to another than in gases in which the interatomic spaces are larger.
