the atomic numver of sodium is 11

its atomic cinfiguration is 2 8 1

there is one valence electron in its outer shell

so it can only donate 1 electron easilly to complete its octet and be stable.

so Sodium metal is monovalent

HERE IS YOUR ANSWER
as we know that the at no of Na(sodium) is 11
so, electronic configuration=2,8,1
since its balance shelly has 1 electron so it needs tk donate this electron to attain stability to its naresh noble gas Neon
so it is monovalent
