It uses the atomic number of various elements for classification. There is no separate slots for isotopes since they have the same atomic number.Justification has been made for placing  hydrogen along with alkali metals in group 1 and all the alkali metals have 1 valence electrons.There are no sub groups and each group is independent in nature.
