The first scene of Merchant of Venice explains the characters of Antonio and Bassanio.  

Explanation:

Antonio seems to have invested all of his money on the cargo. He says that he is not worried about the ships though he doesn't have any other reasons to be worried.

While Bassanio enters the scene and asks for money to marry Portia, Antonio commits to help him. The first scene establishes the trust of Antonio on Bassanio and the greedy nature of the latter who wishes to marry Portia for her beauty and wealth.
