Growth of algae covers the layer of water in pond etc.. This prevents the sunlight from entering water body which serves as a raw material for the process of photosynthesis in plants. Thus, plants can't make their food. Algae also destroys the water quality. It respires by using oxygen from water bodies. Thus it causes the depletion of oxygen from water bodies. It affects aquatic life who uses oxygen for their survival. This process is called EUTROPHICATION.

Hope it will help you

Quite often eutrophication happen when sewage and fertilisers drain into water bodies. it leads to an innaturally rapid growth of algae which form a thick layer over the surface of water body, referred to as algae boom .the dense layer of algae deprive other organism of light and oxygen. besides when they die the bacteria acting on them use up more oxygen .slowly ,most other organism living in the water body die.
