The speed water evaporates contributes directly to how much water vapor is in the air, and contributes indirectly to future precipitation. However, the rate of evaporation forms depends on external variables such as temperature, humidity and wind speed. Generally, when temperature and humidity are constant, and wind speed increases, the rate of evaporation increases as well. When temperature and wind speed are constant, but humidity increases, the rate of evaporation will decrease. When wind speed and humidity stay constant, and temperature increases, then the rate of evaporation will increase because warmer air can hold more water vapor than colder air. All of these variables work together so this experiment is really quite complex. Students include barometric pressure in their analysis because this tends to work in tandem with other variables.

WHAT IS EVAPORATION ?

The process in which the liquid molecules get converted into gaseous state is called Evaporation.

WHAT FACTORS AFFECT EVAPORATION?

The following factors affect the process of evaporatuon :-

  • TEMPERATURE

Temperature is directly propertional to the rate of evaporation.Whenver temperature increases Liquid evaporates faster. This is because high temperature increases the gap between molecules of liquid which ultimately convert it into gas.

  • WIND SPEED

When the wind speed increases it affects the molecules of the liquid because it increases its kinetic energy due to which the kinetic energy tend to convert the liquid into the gaseous . As more kinetic energy required to break the force of attraction between molecule of liquid and convert it into gas.It is directly propertional to the rate of evaporation.

  • SURFACE AREA

The more surface area leads to more interconnection of the liquid molecules with that of the air which increases the rate of evaporation because air increases rate of conversion from liquid to gas.It is also directly propertional to the rate of evaporation .

  • HUMIDITY

The amount of water molecule present in the atmosphere in the gaseous state is known as humidity . But it is inversly propertional to the rate of evaporation because it occupy most of the space of water in atmosphere and no-more space left for water to evaporate.
