Explain how the lac operon gets switched on in the presence of lactose in E.coli

Lactose is the substrate for the enzyme beta-galactosidase and it regulates switching on and off of the operon. The operator gene become free and induces the RNA polymerase to bind with promoter gene. Then transcription starts.
