Ribs cover lungs and Diapgragm lies below lungs.
The process of taking in air and then echaling it is known as breathing.
When we inhale air, diaphragm moves downwards and ribs move outwards, increasing the surface area of lungs so that more air could be inhaled at a time.
When we exhale air, diaphragm moves upwards and ribs move inwards thus pushing air outside.
In this way ribs and diaphragm helps in breathing.

During inspiration, the diaphragm nd the intercostal muscles contract. The diaphragm moves downwards increasing the volume of thoracic (chest,) cavity, nd the intercostal muscles pull the ribs up expanding the ribcage nd further increasing this volume...... "
