Sodium has atomic number of 11 which means, it has 2 electrons in the first shell, 8 electrons in the second shell and 1 electrons in the outermost shell.
To get itself stabilized, sodium gives away this electron to chlorine which needs one electron to complete its outermost shell.
Thus, they combine in the ratio of 1:1 to form Sodium chloride molecule.
