  • The Revolt of 1857 is also called the first war of independence. The main causes of this revolt were the ill treatment of the Indians by the British, the issue of the Enfield Riffle , political issues like the introduction of the subsidiary alliance and the doctrine of lapse, religious issues like forcibly converting Indians to Christianity, and imposing taxes on lands were temples and mosques stood, Military factors like forcing Indian soldiers to travel abroad, and not allowing them higher posts in the army and the administration.
  • This revolt was led by brave heroes of our nation- Nana Sahib, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Tantia Tope, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Khan Bahadur Khan, Kunwar Singh etc. The main centres of the revolt were- Delhi, Meerut, Kanpur, Awadh, Jhansi and Arrah ( Bihar ). Though this revolt failed, it gave the Indians an aspiration and a hope that they could fight the British. This revolt saw the end of company rule in India. The governance was passed to the Royal Crown by the Government of India Act of 1858.
