because of light in surroundings like sunlight, light from build etc. if in night you switch of all lights you will not able to see it.

We are able to see the objects around is even though they don't possess their own light . This is because the light in our surroundings strikes an object and the light falls in our eye due to which the image of the object is formed in our retina .
