Answer:

An image can be seen in the mirror because the light reflected from an object falls on the mirror and it is reflected. So, light incident on any smooth shiny surface like a mirror bounces back into the same medium. This bouncing of light by any smooth surface is called reflection of light.

Answer:

An image can be seen in the mirror because the light reflected from an object falls on the mirror and it is reflected. So, light incident on any smooth shiny surface like a mirror bounces back into the same medium. This bouncing of light by any smooth surface is called reflection of light.

Explanation:

Light is the cause for image formation in a plain mirror, without light, image cannot form.

When we stand in front of a mirror, the light falling on our face and body parts get reflected in all directions. Since there are ups-down in our body parts, the light reflection is diffused “light reflection” (angle of incidence not equal to angle of reflection). This diffused light reflection carry the information such as ups and down, color, feature, and fabric in it. Or we can say it carries our image.

The rays reflected from our body enter the glass mirror in front of us and light gets through the front surface of the mirror by refraction. The refracted light travel through the thickness of the glass before meeting the back surface of the glass, where there is silver coating, which does not allow the light pass through, hence the light gets reflected back once again from the silver coating.

Since the back surface of the mirror perfectly plane, the light reflecting back from the silver coating is regular reflection (angle if incidence = angle of reflection). The Silver coating converts diffused light reflection in regular light reflection. In this process the image carried by the incident diffused light is exchanged to the silver coating which forms image in the mirror. The light reflected from the silver coating comes out of the front surface of the mirror back to our eye, where our brain interprets the image.
