it is quite easy.......

  1. take a graph paper and the irregular object you have to measure.
  2. now place the object on the graph paper and trace around it using a pencil or a pen.
  3. now count the number of complete squares. Then count the number of incomplete squares which are half or more than half within the outline.ignore the sqaures which are less than half.
  • the sum of the areas of the incomplete square and the complete squares gives the approximate area of the irregular object.  

for example:

number of complete squares = 4

number of incomplete squares marked =4

total number of sqaures = 4+4=8

area of the irregular object = 8x1 cm2

the approximate area of the object is 8cm 2
