Answer:
I was new to town, and wanted to make friends with spiritual people. My two-year old daughter and I were in the park, and crossed paths with a lady and her two young children, her daughter was the same age as mine.
We were only together for a few minutes, maybe ten to fifteen, but her demeanor, and dignified behavior, convinced me that she was someone I wanted to know better.
I liked what she did not do: she didn’t ramble on and on about herself. She didn’t go into details about her children. She didn’t talk trash on anybody, and she didn’t talk about anything negative. She didn’t yell at her kids.
She was friendly enough to me, but she was busy and couldn’t stay long. Her kids minded her.
I wanted to contact her right away, but felt I didn’t have the standing to do so. I would simply have to wait.
Two years, finally, a mutual friend just happened to bring the two of us together again, through an activity for our children.
It was at the end of summer when we were to have our initial gathering to plan a program. I remember my family vacationed in the mountains, and as we returned home, my heart surged, as I knew this lady held a secret that I longed to know.
It was through hearing about her ring, rich with religious symbols, that I overheard my daughter asking her about, as I fetched coffee. I was so excited at what I heard. I grabbed the tray of coffee and rushed into the room, “What? What does it stand for? What does it mean?” The lady and my daughter together explained to me the symbols, which then opened up a new set of questions I had to know the answers to.
She told me about her religion that day, and in the weeks and few months to come. I believed what she said, because of her integrity. Her marriage was strong, her children with happy and healthy, her faith was intelligent and strong. She lived the way that I believe the early Christians lived: so devoted, so faithful, so full of love for the One they professed allegiance to.
It wasn’t long before my family too, embraced the Cause she so faithfully followed. She is a true friend.
