  • The outside, middle, and inner ear are separated into three regions. The pinna is the ridged cartilage that makes up the outer ear and is covered by skin. The pinna receives sound through the external auditory canal, a tiny tube that ends at the eardrum (tympanic membrane).
  • In reaction to sound, the eardrum and its little connecting bones in the middle of the ear quiver, and the vibrations are conveyed to the nearby cochlea. The spiral-shaped cochlea in the inner ear turns sound into nerve impulses that go to the brain.
  • Fluid-filled semicircular canals link the cochlea and nerves in the inner ear (labyrinths). On balance and head position, they communicate with the brain. The eustachian tube is evacuated of fluid (auditory tube).
