The two main weathering processes are chemical (referring to erosion via chemical reactions) and mechanical (the physical process of erosion), biological weathering refers to the weathering of rocks by living organisms, which can cause both chemical and mechanical weathering.

An example of mechanical biological weathering is when a tree takes root in the fractures of a rock and grows until those fractures become larger and breaks the rock apart.

Another example is when some animals (mainly sea life) will bore their way into rocks creating a network of holes and tracks.

An example of chemical biological weathering is when certain mosses, lichens, algae, fungi and even the smallest bacteria, will form on a rock, and will produce chemicals which (depending on the rock type) will eat away at the rock, giving the plant nutrients but also weathering at the same time..
