Nerve tissue
neurons are the structural and functional unit of nervous tissue. neurons are ectodermal.
components of nervous tissue: nerve tissue consists of two cell types. nerve cells and supporting cells.
● NEURONS
neuron is a structural and functional unit of nervous tissue. structure of a multi polar neuron is described here. it consists of a cell body and two types of cell processes - dendrites and axon.
● CELL BODY
The cell body is also known as cyton or soma. it contains the nucleus, with a prominent nucleolus. the cytoplasm contains Nissil bodies. Golgi complex, mitochondria, neurofilaments, and ocassionally pigments such as lipifuscin.
● DENDRITES
dendrites are usually short, and they divide like the branches of a tree.
● AXON
the Axon is a single long and cylindrical process that originates from short cone shaped region of perikaryon called the axon hillock. Axons of the motor neurons of the spinal cord that innervate the foot muscles may be upto 100 cm long.
● SYNAPSE
it is formed by an axon. and a thin intercellular space is called the synaptic cleft. most synapses transmit information to next neuron by releasing chemical neurotransmitters.
