Answer:

An upward stream of running water is used to wash powdered ore. The lighter particles of the gangue are washed away and the heavier ore is left behind. This technique separates the gangue from the ore using the difference in their specific gravities. It is, also known as gravity separation

Answer:

Hydraulic separation method is based on gravitation.

The heavy particles of ores can be easily separated from the light particles of gangue by the gravitational method.

Explanation:

Hydraulic separation method :

Construction:

1. The hydraulic separation method is based on the working of a mill.

2. There is a tapering vessel similar to that used in a grinding mill.

3. It opens in a tank-like container that is tapering on the lower side.

4. The tank has an outlet for water on the upper side and a water inlet on the lower side.

Working:

1. The finely ground ore is released in the tank.

2. A forceful flow of water is introduced in the tank from the lower side.

3. Gangue particles are lighter and hence they flow out along with the water jet from the outlet on the upper side. And they get collected separately.

4. At the same time the heavy particles of the ore are collected at the bottom from the lower side of the tank.

In short, this method is based on the law of gravitation, wherein particles of the same size are separated by their weight with the help of water.
