At High Altitude , the Oxygen content in air is less.
So when someone is doing some rigorous task ( training at high altitude,) he/she can face deficiency of oxygen more acutely as training requires more demand of oxygen for muscles.
The increased demand with less supply of oxygen can lead to
1. pulmonary or cerebral edema, in which abnormal amounts of fluid collect in the lungs and around the brain
2. Headache Vomitting, Nausea is also observed commonly
Regardless of this still athletes do this because it has positive effects also
1. It strengthens the immune system by production of RBCs
2. As athletes have trained for hard environment, now they can cope with actual marathon or run where for them things may not seem as difficult
Hope it was helpful
