Bhopal Gas Tragedy took place in 1984. It occurred on the night of 2nd and 3rd December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited Pesticide plant in Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh.

Over 8000 died within two weeks and another 8000 people died from gas related diseases. Criminal cases were filed by the victims against Warren Anderson, CEO of Union Carbide Corporation. The cases are still pending.

Effects:

Thousands of people had succumbed by the morning hours after the leak in the night. There were mass funerals and mass cremation. Bodies were dumped in Narmada river and more than 1,70,000 people were admitted in hospitals.

The initial effects of exposure were vomiting, severe eye irritation, coughing and feeling of suffocation. The causes of deaths were choking, reflex organic circulatory collapses and pulmonary oedema.
