The dutch had imposed taxes and rents on the land being cultivated.
Thus in some cases the Dutch allowed the villagers to use the land for free but on the condition that they would help in cutting the trees and provide buffaloes for free for transportation of the timber.
This was known as the Blandongdiensten system.
After some time the Dutch started giving small wages to the villagers for the work but prohibited providing the land for cultivator.
