When India gained independence from the British in 1947, there were several princely states which had been controlled by the British, apart from the several colonial enclaves controlled by France and Portugal.

The Government of India, post-independence, worked on the political integration of these princely states. They were gradually convinced to become part of independent India, by stalwarts like Sardar Vallabhai Patel and V. P. Menon. Gradually by 1956, the central government was able to extend its authority over these states and bring their administrations under it.
