Democracy is a system of rule by laws, not individuals. In a democracy, the rule of law protects the rights of citizens, maintains order, and limits the power of government. All citizens are equal under the law. ... No one may be taxed or prosecuted except by a law established in advance.

The main principles of democracy are explained below:

i) Rule of law: Everybody is subjugated under the law in a democratic state. Law will treat all people in the same way irrespective of their social status.

ii) Respect of human rights: Humans rights are not exploited in a democratic state.

iii) Freedom of press: In a democratic state media is always free.

iv) Enlightened citizens  

v) Active political process  

Above are the principle of democracy. Without them, democracy can’t exist.
