The British government had a monopoly on salt production and had imposed a tax on it which was an essential commodity for rich and poor alike and thus, on March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi along with his 78 followers, began his famous Dandi March, from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal town of Dandi and covered a distance of 375 km in 24 days and reached Dandi on April 6 and violated the law by making salt.
