∆ Theories of failure describe the elastic failure of the mechanical components. At the time of working machine components subjected to various loads which cause different types of stress in it. The failure in the materials is of two type i.e. brittle failure and ductile failure.

∆ In machine design an element is said to have failed if it ceases to perform its function. There are basically two types of mechanical failure: Yielding- This is due to excessive inelastic deformation rendering the machine part unsuitable to perform its function.
