The two reasons due to which carbon forms large number of compounds are:-
1. Tetravalency:- Carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell. So it can neither lose 4 electrons nor gain 4 electrons to acquire noble gas electronic configuration. Due to tetravalency it has tendecy to form covalent bond with 4 other atoms or 4 single covalent bond.
2. Catenation:- C atom have tendency to link with one another through covalent bonds to forn chains and rings. This property is known as catenation.
Due to this properties C atom forms large number of compounds.
Hope it helps. All the best for exam :)
