India’s Mawlynnong village, Meghalaya has brought immense proud to the country by being the cleanest village in entire Asia! Agriculture and tourism are the main source of livelihood for the villagers. Nationally and Internationally the village has attracted attention of many tourists for the efforts its’ residents have taken to keep the surroundings as beautiful as it was gifted by the Mother Nature.

Tourists can de-stress themselves from their hustle-bustle city life in this village. Scenic beauty and agri- tourism shall rejuvenate them. It is located in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state, India. It is 90 km from Shillong, along the India-Bangladesh border. Population of village is 500-600. Betel nut is the main crop grown in the region along with arecanut, black pepper, bay leaf, pine apple and pamalo. Pork is widely used in the cooking therefore some villagers are engaged in pig farming. Paddy or vegetable farming is a challenge in the village as it is hilly area where most of the land is covered by the rocks. Yet some residents, “Grow vegetables for our own personal use and not for commercial purpose as our land in not flat,” says young man Sumar.

25% spices and pineapples are sold within the village to the tourists while rest is sold to traders from nearby places namely Lyngkhat, Pynursla and Shillong. Vegetables are sold within the village as it is consumed for cooking food for the tourists. “Many times we also buy veggies as required from Shillong along with rice. We eat Andhra rice,” says Sumar.
