Differences between smelting and roasting are:--

)Smelting is process of extracting metal by heating metal oxide with suitable reducing agent as carbon, hydrogen whereas roasting involves heating of ore either alone or in presence of oxidizing agent mostly oxygen.

)Smelting is done in open at high temperature and hence also known as pyrometallurgy whereas roasting is done in reverberatory furnace.

)In smelting metals like iron, zinc, and lead are extracted and in roasting ores of sulphides are extracted.

)Smelting requires additional reagent known as flux and no such reagent required in roasting.

)In smelting impurities are called as slag and in roasting impurities are of sulphides.
