When we eat food , it gets broken down into smaller and soluble substances during digestion. The digested food is absorbed and utilized by our body.
The human digestive system consists of alimentary canal and its associated with glands . The various organs of the human digestive system in sequence are : Mouth ( Buccal cavity) , Oesophagus (or food pipe) , Stomach, Small intestine , large intestine, Rectum and Anus.
The mouth contains teeth which chews the food tongue helps in mixing the saliva in the food and saliva is a digestive juice which helps to digest the starch present in food partially.
After being chewed and swallowed, the food enters the Oesophagus . The Oesophagusis a long tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach.Oesophagus runs the food slightly from the mouth to stomach. The stomach is a large, sack-like organ that churns the food and bathes it in a very strong acid (gastric acid). Food in the stomach that is partly digested and mixed with stomach acids is called chyme. The small intestine is very long tube about 7.5 m long. The small intestine in human beings is the site of complete digestion of food . The small intestine is also the main region for the absorption of digested food. The large intestine is about 1.5 meter long. The large intestine absorbs most of the water from the undigested food material. The undigested food is stored in Rectum until it is excreted via the anus.
