Sedimentation, or clarification, is the processes of letting suspended material settle by gravity.The purpose of sedimentation is to enhance the filtration process by removing particulates. For example, sand and silt can be carried in suspension in river water and on reaching the sea bed deposited by sedimentation.

Decantation is defined as the separation process in which two immiscible liquids are separated. This is done by pouring out the clear upper layer of liquid. Separation of a mixture of oil from water is an example of decantation.
