Four components of prevention flood disasters in India are of key significance:

Flood prevention is designed to prevent dangerous floods from occurring, or at least to make it more difficult for them to occur (measures such as forestation or removing impermeable surfaces in the catchment area to increase local water storage.

Flood control is supposed to prevent high-value areas from being flooded (e.g. dykes, detention basins, dams).

Loss mitigation limits the material losses if the flooding of a building cannot be prevented (e.g. flood-proofing, evacuation).

Financial protection – usually in the form of an insurance policy – protects against financial ruin, enables immediate reconstruction and is a key factor in managing risk and building high resilience.

Flood is a natural disaster that affects a lot of people per year. Five possible risk reduction measures for floods are as following:

Points:

  • Better Flood warning systems: In the flood of Kedarnath temple, thousands of people died and lost. If there was a better flood warning system, the tragedy wouldn't not happened.
  • Better and safe homes: During floods, lot of houses get affected. So houses in the flood area should be strong.
  • Plant more trees: Trees help in holding soil in the ground. If in any area, more trees are there, the effect of flood will be less on people.
  • Restore rivers: Barrages are unhealthy for the environment in a long term, so restoring river will help river float in its own way.
  • Making barrages in the area of uneven floating rivers: Some rivers are not boon to to the people living in their area. For example 'the Kosi' river was the mourning of Bihar but after making a barrage over it, the situation became better.
