Explain in detail the process of fragmentation in spirogyra. (For 5 marks)

Spirogyra species can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual, or vegetative, reproduction occurs by simple fragmentation of the filaments. Sexual reproduction occurs by a process known as conjugation, in which cells of two filaments lying side by side are joined by outgrowths called conjugation tubes.

Fragmentation (1. fragmere – to break) : It is the process of bracking up of the body of an organism into two or more parts called fragments, each of which grows into a new individual. Fragmentation is quite common in algae, fungi, bryophytes and some marine ribbon worms.
