Australians used to burn bush land to turn it into grass land, an environment more suitable for their economy, because they were big game hunters.

Slash and burn agriculturists turned primary jungle into secondary jungle. With the emergence of cities and the growth of human population large parts of wood land was turned into cultivated land. Greece, Lebanon and Syria were deforested in ancient time, Central Europe followed since the Middle Ages, Brazil, Central Africa since the 18th century.

All in all human activities have had the main effect of turning natural habitats, especially forests, but also wetlands and marshes, into habitats suitable for food production. What is left are mostly mountain habitats or areas too cold or too dry for large scale settlement.
