Aim: To prove that metal oxides are basic in nature.
Method: Take an iron nail and use sandpaper to remove dust and rust from it. After cleaning, it place it under oxygen or in the presence of year for 2 days. You will see that there is a yellow reddish substance will be formed on the iron nail. Its called the rust or iron oxide (metal oxide). Now dissolve it into water for 10 minutes. You will find that it has formed a solution named iron hydroxide, which is basic in nature and turn red litmus blue.
