The consumer protection act is meant for protecting the welfare of the people and to provide them with information regarding their choices which can be made on the basis of their requirements. The Act is made for the safety and well being of the people and gives them rights that protect them from different hazards

The consumers are protected by the act from the traders who use unfair methods of selling their products. They could be charging extra price than what the product is to be sold or use wrong means of selling the goods. The consumers can return goods which are defective and they have paid a price for it and get compensated for them

  • Here, DC Sharma (the respondent), a govt. official had paid an initial amount for allocation of a plot of INR 5 lakhs in the year 1997, by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority.
  • He had requested more time for the installment payment as he wanted to avail loan facility from the office. In the meantime, the plot that was allotted to him by way of a draw of lots was allotted to another person, 2 years prior to the draw of lots.
  • Because of this laxity of the DDA, the DC Sharma had approached the consumer district forum, which dismissed the case, however the State consumer forum had passed an order in favor of the DC Sharma
