What you need:
A large glass full of water and a lump of mud.
What you do:
Put the clod of soil into the large glass full of water. Observe what happens.
What you see:
You will see bubbles arising from the clod.
How did the bubbles form?
The bubbles formed because of the air that was trapped in the clod of soil.
Does this mean that air goes down into the soil?
Yes, it does. And it is a good thing for plants that it does.
Nitrogen is essential for plants and though air is four-fifths nitrogen, plants cannot obtain nitrogen directly from the air. When air penetrates into the soil, certain bacteria that live in the soil remove nitrogen from the air and change it into a form that can be used by plants.
