The Constitution prevents the imposition of religious taxes. Making holy places and different religious associations charge excluded is the cleanest approach to evade government involvement with (and practicing undue impact over) religion.

First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. No, churches should not pay taxes

The tax-exempt status of churches protects religious freedom and the common good by making it easier for churches to survive and do positive work for their community.
