when a substance is heated the particles expand and move freely and when it is cooled down it contracts bcz particles are held tightly

eg.

if plastic is heated it expands but when it is cooled it contracts

The motion and spacing of the particles determines the state of matter of the substance. The end result of increased molecular motion is that the object expands and takes up more space
