A secular state is an idea pertaining to secularity, whereby a state is or purports to be officially neutral in matters of religion, supporting neither religion nor irreligion.

The constitution under article 15 declares all citizens as equal and there is no difference on the basis of religion. Moreover under 42nd Amendment 1976, the word "Secular" was incorporated into the Preamble of the Constitution of India, which also made India a fully secular country.

However, neither India's constitution nor its laws define the relationship between religion and state.
